A writing sample in this category focuses on the purpose and reflects an awareness of audience.  Ideas are clear and fully developed.  This paper includes all or most of these characteristics:

 

·         an effective beginning

 

·         varied types of sentences

 

·         a topic sentence that states the main idea

 

·         fully developed information and/or sensory details that enhance the main details

 

·         logical development

 

·         correct application of mechanics

 

·         grammar and usage skills appropriate to grade level

A writing sample in this category focuses on the purpose and reflects a sense of audience.  Ideas are clear yet some details are omitted.  This paper includes all or most of these characteristics:

 

·         an adequate beginning

 

·         varied types of sentences

 

·         clear, but not vivid language

 

·         a topic sentence that states the main idea

 

·         sufficient information and/or sensory details  to enhance the main idea

 

·         logical development

A writing sample in this category responds to the assignment, but lacks clarity and completeness.  This paper includes all or most of these characteristics:

 

·         an abrupt or vague beginning

 

·         unvaried types of sentences

 

·         dull and repetitive language

 

·         a topic sentence that is too broad or too narrow

 

·         sketchy information or details

 

·         confused development

 

·         inconsistent application of mechanics, grammar, and usage skills appropriate to grade level

·         grammar, and usage skills appropriate to grade level

·         no logical development

 

·         excessive errors in application of
