Simple Subjects and Simple Verbs

Circle the simple subject in each sentence. The simple subject tells who or what the sentence is about. Then underline the verb. Remember, the verb tells what the subject is doing or it tells about the subject’s being.
1. A tree squirrel uses its bushy tail for balance.
2. On hot days, the squirrel curls its tail over its back for shade.
3. The splendid tail of a gray squirrel is 12 inches long.
4. A squirrel scampers on the ground, in trees, and on telephone wires.
5. A squirrel searches for a home in a hollow tree trunk.
6. Many squirrels, however, build nests from leaves and twigs.
7. The squirrel packs the leaves and twigs close together.
8. The layers of twigs and leaves become a warm dry home.
9. Foxes, bobcats, dogs, and cats hunt squirrels.
10. The ground is a dangerous place for a squirrel.
11. A squirrel stores food for the winter months.
12. Red squirrels are the most active and noisiest squirrels.
13. These noisy squirrels often seem angry with each other.
14. Some flying squirrels glide more than 150 Feet!
15. Most flying squirrels are only active at night.
