Setting
1. Draw a picture of your favorite place from the story. Under the picture, describe what happened there.
2. How important is the setting of the story? Would the story have been changed at all if the setting had changed?
3. How well does the author describe the setting? Would you be able to draw a picture of it?
4. What parts of the selections could have happened near where you live? Describe those events.
5. How is the setting like a place you've been?
6. Rewrite a section of this story using a totally different setting.
7. How does the author describe when the story takes place?
8. What words did the author use to help you "see" where the story takes place?
Characters
1. Which character is the most important in the story? Why do you think so?
2. How could the author have introduced the main character in a more interesting way?
3. What traits of the main character would you have changed? Would that have changed the story?
4. What character did you like the most? Explain why.
5. Did you feel like one of the characters…as if the action were happening to you? How did the author make you feel that way?
6. How are any of the characters like people you know?
7. How does the main character in this book compare to the main character in another book by the same author?
8. If a character from the book were your neighbor, what are some things you might enjoy doing together?
