Main Idea

Most paragraphs you read have an important point that is called the main idea. Sometimes the writer states the main idea directly in a sentence that may be found at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of the paragraph.

Read the paragraph and look for the main idea.

Campers exercise every day. They use computers to build model rockets. They sample freeze-dried food. They try on space suits and use a zero-gravity machine. They train for recovery at sea. They learn how to use a robot arm. Kids at Space Camp train and learn just as real astronauts do.

In the paragraph above, the main idea is stated in the sentence at the end. The other information in the paragraph helps support the main idea. These details also add interest to the paragraph.
